Lucy's Minds Matter journey

From 'not sure' to thriving at Claremont McKenna:

Lucy M's journey to Claremont McKenna College is a testament to the transformative power of the Minds Matter program. As a first-generation college student from a family with no exposure to college graduates, Lucy initially faced significant barriers. Navigating the college application process felt daunting, and she lacked the familiarity with the college experience.

"My parents are both immigrants. Neither went to college. None of their friends went to college. Outside of my classroom teachers, I didn't know anyone who went to college."

Lucy was initially unsure about joining Minds Matter Houston. She missed the initial information session and wasn't sure how she would manage the Saturday program. Transportation was a concern, as her father worked on Saturdays. Her parents, while acknowledging the logistical challenges, were incredibly supportive. They recognized the value of the program and were determined to make it work, even if it meant finding alternative transportation options.

Lucy initially had some reservations about the program. She wasn't sure what "college readiness" meant and wondered if her mentors would truly understand her background. To her surprise, her mentors exceeded her expectations. They were not only knowledgeable but also incredibly supportive and genuinely interested in her as an individual. Mentor Vincent even brought her a milk tea giftset from his trip to his family home in Vietnam, demonstrating a desire to connect with her.

However, Minds Matter provided Lucy with invaluable opportunities and support. The program exposed her to diverse perspectives and experiences, including a summer program in Spain, broadening her horizons and building her confidence. The guidance and mentorship she received from Minds Matter staff and her dedicated mentors were instrumental in helping her navigate the complexities of college applications and financial aid. Lucy is now a junior at Claremont McKenna, studying abroad in Copenhagen and pursuing her passion for International Studies.

Lucy's story highlights the importance of mentorship and access to opportunities for first-generation students. By providing a supportive network and empowering students with the knowledge and resources they need, Minds Matter plays a crucial role in helping students like Lucy achieve their academic and personal goals.
